The theme chosen for the Conference of the World Federation for Mental Health this year was "Problems of Growing Up in a Changing World". The Conference opened with a paper from its President, Dr. Margaret Mead, on "Growing Up in Different Cultures". She pointed out that the biological pattern of individuation was almost the same for all human babies, in whatever country they were born, and it had been proved that children of all races could acquire the language and customs of any society in which they were brought up. Although no one pattern of culture had ever become universal, there were fundamentally accepted concepts, such as the acceptance of the family as the basic unit. Primitive societies were extremely rigid and resistant to change but to-day in many countries we were faced with the reverse problem of extremely rapid change.
